Happy Easter Eve

Sorry, I didn't know what else to use for a title...

I finished making the EIGHTY blocks late last night.  Because I had used one strip from the jelly roll (or maybe it was two), I didn't have enough to make all the blocks.  Luckily, I had already cut out some solid blue from the same 'scratched' project so I used those.

Joined granddaughter and her two daughters at the movies at noon today... saw HOP - kind of a silly movie but the girls seemed to enjoy it and it did have some 'interesting' parts.  It was raining when we came out of the theatre - rain makes some people sleepy and that's what it did to me.  After I got home, I set the alarm on my phone for 1 hr. 16 minutes ( 3 pm) and laid down on the couch.  As usual, I shut the alarm off and kept laying there for another 15 minutes or so - usually it's half an hour.

Fixed dinner... meat loaf and boiled potatoes and while it was cooking, I did a little bit of work on the blocks.  After dinner, I had two jello salads to make for dinner with family tomorrow.  Once those were done, it was back to my sewing room.

Four out of ten rows done so far... maybe I can do a couple before we leave for dinner and maybe the rest after we get back - we'll see.  The 'rumor' is that we're supposed to get snow tomorrow... hope it's just a sick April Fool's joke.

Ok, since this top is almost done that means I have ( well, had) an empty tub

But I took another project in waiting out of a plastic ziploc type bag and put it in... this will be one of the next one's I work on.

Definitely not baby colors but it can always be used as a lap quilt... it's just something for me to try using some of my fat quarters on.  You know, now that I look at them, I'm wondering if maybe one of the fat quarter sets that I've been getting monthly from Quilt in a Day might work just as well... or maybe I'll make one with these fqs and another with the QIAD set.  I'm not deciding a whole lot until I get my "Marie" back from her visit to the 'spa'.

I watched some videos on youtube today, too.  One with Jamie Wallen showing background motifs and a couple with Linda V. Taylor.  The one with Linda that really got my attention was an antique Sunbonnet Sue and Sam quilt that she had acquired.  It was already hand quilted but she wanted to give it a little more 'punch' and to use it as a wall hanging.  I was interested because I have that Sunbonnet Sue quilt that a former guild member made and I'm really looking for ideas on what to do with it.  I think this video will help out quite a bit.

Another one of Linda's videos that I watched was the Texas, Our Texas quilt.  It's the same one that I made for one of my grandsons who live in Texas.  I sure wish I had seen this before I quilted his... of course, she didn't have it then.  She had some good ideas for the borders, which I struggled with ( compounded by my being a pretty new mid arm owner).  IF I was really ambitious and didn't have a list longer than my arm of quilts I still want to do the first time, I'd consider doing it again.

Ok, Buddy is sitting here politely waiting for me so we can go to bed ( and he can get his bedtime snack lol).

Little of this, little of that

Dear hubby asked me this morning if my machine was broke... because I wasn't in my sewing room.  lol   I told him that I was taking a little break while deciding what day I want to take it in for it's 'spa' visit.  Since I have a 'date' with granddaughter and her two daughters on Saturday and Sunday is Easter ( and the shop is closed on Sundays anyway) - I guess she'll go in on Monday if the weather is nice.  Hubby wants to ride along and stop at Barnes & Noble on the way back home.

What I was actually doing was trying to do a little cleaning up and organizing so that I'd have room for whatever the next project might be.  And I did do some - emptied and sorted out the bag of fabrics I got from quilting friend, Judy and I found a larger piece of batting so I only needed to zigzag stitch two together for the pink donation quilt... it's on Mo'e now and sides and top are basted down and I've done some marking trying to decide what I want to do in the borders.

Then, I found a tub with 'something' in it... I opened it... maybe not a good thing.  Too late ... it's the fabric that I was going to use for the double dresden plate.  I'd kind of forgotten about it; it wasn't that far back in my memory because I've been coming across one of the dresden plates at least once a day - can't figure out what I did with the first one, though -- all the more reason to CLEAN my room.

Well, since the tub was opened, I started cutting for the blocks... I was only going to do a couple - just to see what it looks like  lol   I have twenty and a half done. (need eighty)

The white yardage is a constant... the blues are from a jelly roll and there are the usual 42 strips with at least two, sometimes three of the same print.  I've had to unstitch and restitch a couple of blocks because I stitched them with one side upside down - for example in the block above - the center blue piece was on the outside edge.  I'm using one of the pinking blades that I bought for my rotary cutter so that hopefully the pieces will be easier to line up with the pinked edges of the jelly roll.  They're not matching up perfectly, but close enough.    I'm going to try and get the other sixty done tomorrow and hopefully get the blocks stitched together before Monday.

Checking another quilt top off my list

The fatcatpatterns.com chicken quilt top is D O N E

Here it is after I got the second sashing on... went together pretty easy except for one corner stone... third one down on the left hand side.

for some reason, it didn't line up... I looked across the row and at all the other rows - every corner stone was spot on except for this one.

Luckily it was a quick and easy fix...

Then it was time for the outer border, which was blue in the pattern so I thought I'd do the same, but it all depended on what I had in my stash.  It called for one yard... I might have that....  went 'shopping' in my 'stash' room and "YES!!"  I found a blue that was just about a yard long.  After cutting the 3.5" strips, I wondered why the pattern called for a yard... I certainly didn't need that much.   

Oh yeah, then came problem #2.. I measured and cut the side borders according to pattern instructions and they fit perfectly.  I measured and cut one top/bottom border and went to pin it on ( middle and two ends)... it wasn't long enough!  I checked the pattern directions again... yes, I cut it at the stated length.  So, nothing to do but take a scrap from the side borders and stitch it on to each of the top and bottom borders.  I had already had to do it to get the measurement given so just added a smaller piece to the opposite end of each strip.  They were only a couple inches short on each end... I got to thinking about it and wondered if the top & bottom should have been sewn on first, but then the sides would have been short.  It had to be a typo because, after adding the couple more inches on each strip and sewing them onto the quilt top, it now measures 60" x 77.5" which is the finished size.

Anyway... here it is, along with Mr. Prissy peaking out from underneath the bottom right corner.

and here's the backing fabric and possibly the binding.

This means I have three quilts ready to finish - not counting the donation quilt that's backing is already loaded onto Mo'e ( I just need to cut batting for it).  

Now I'm trying to convince myself to do some cleaning up in my sewing room before I try to start another quilt top.  I'd love to start working on the Rare Bear project but I need space to lay out fabrics and pin pattern pieces onto.  See, I REALLY need to clean :(.

Wow!  It's only 7:15 EST and I'm done with my blog for the day.  Buddy and I will be able to go to bed at a decent hour tonight; he'll like that.

The chickens have been 'corraled'

Just a quick 'note' since it's just after midnight and Buddy is growling at me because it's past our bedtimes.

I got the inner sashing (corral) onto all of the blocks

and have started putting the outer sashing and cornerstones on... two rows done and two more to go.

Then, there's an outer border to cut and sew on... but first I'll have to find some fabric for it.  Still trying not to buy anything other than the backing so I'll have to see what I've got in my stash - sure won't be scraps.

I don't have a dozen eggs

but I do have a dozen chickens/roosters!  The applique' part is done - now I just need to square up/trim the blocks and add sashing before putting the top together.


I tried to do a video to show all my 'beautiful' poultry but something wasn't co-operating.  It was so easy the first time I tried ( last week or maybe the week before) - making the video was easy this time, just couldn't get it to play once I got it onto my blog page.  I've been trying for over an hour and getting quite grumpy in the process.  Yes, some naughty words have escaped my lips... I just hate being frustrated over something that was so simple before.


Guess I'll just have to show you the last three....

It took me most of the afternoon to trace onto fusible, cut out the fusible pattern, fuse onto fabric, cut again, fuse together onto a silicone sheet and then on to the background fabric and then doing the applique' for each of the three chickens. It seemed to take forever; I was surprised when I looked at the clock at one point and saw that I'd only been at it for a couple of hours... thought for sure it must be close to dinner time.

Ok, now that I've given up on trying to put a video on here tonight, I'm going to go take a load of towels out of the dryer and put a second load in ( yeah, I do housework once in awhile lol).  I can fold the towels later tonight while watching tv.

Still no new chickens

But I did finish quilting the tree skirt, which ended up being no easy matter.  The first half went fine.. a few thread breaks here and there, but nothing major.  The second half is another story.  When I changed bobbins is when I noticed a problem - well, I should say AFTER I changed bobbins and AFTER I had done a great deal of quilting and had rolled the quilt a couple of times - THEN I noticed the problem.  My tension was messed up!!!

I checked the bobbin tension and it was fine.  I looked at the machine head and saw a problem where the thread somehow moved out of the thread path; I put it back where I thought it was supposed to go... took out the bad stitching ( yes, there was a LOT).. tested the tension/stitching on the borders - nope, not right... couldn't see what the problem was and couldn't remember where the book with the pic of the thread path was ( no, I didn't take care of it like I usually do). 

Had to find that ratchin' fratchin' book!!... OH! and at some point I poked myself with a pin and got blood on the quilt top... luckily in the part that gets cut off, but still!!!...

Ok, found the book - yep! there was the problem... I zigged when I should have zagged in the thread path.  Corrected it, tested again and it was perfect - SPOT ON!! and I was finally able to finish the quilting... both halves are done, folded up and back in the bag they were delivered to me in, ready to be given back to Ms. Polly.

I only took a pic of one half because they are identical... if you've seen one, you've seen the other.  You'll notice that I didn't trim... I only did the quilting - as it was I had to trim the backing fabric because it wasn't straight; I could have been a witch and returned it with a note telling her to straighten it out herself - but I didn't.  I also didn't do a lot of fancy quilting... I'm doing it for free and not spending days working on it.  I think it looks pretty good - actually better in person than in the pic.

After that was all done, I took the pink quilt that I worked on during the quilt show last weekend and added a border to it and then pieced backing together and got it loaded onto Mo'e ( just the backing).  I'll finish loading it tomorrow - need to find batting for it first.  I've pretty much used up the charity batting scraps so I might have to cut a fresh piece from the bolt.

I think I'll get back to the chickens tomorrow and finish them up.  I want to take "Marie" ( my 2nd Janome) in for a D & C within the next week or so and I don't want to switch machines in the middle of applique'.  "Jan" ( my older Janome) used to do WONDERFUL satin stitch - and probably still does, but I don't want to risk using her for the final three.  "She" might decide to throw a fit and mess them up ... our machines do have personalities and they're not always nice ones.  I also need to piece the backing for this latest chicken quilt and for the bovine quilt, but that's something that I can trust "Jan" to do.  Come to think of it, I haven't put a backing together for the Chicken Buffet quilt yet...guess I'll be doing that one, too.

Ok, past my bedtime and I didn't have a nap today....

No chickens today

Today was one of 'those' days... I got up too early then laid on the couch and slept for HOURS.  When I finally got up ( about four hours later), I just didn't feel like doing anything other than sit in front of my computer and 'play'.

Eventually, I did load something onto Mo'e and did some quilting. 

It's the first half of the Christmas tree skirt that I was asked to quilt for the guild's Festival of Trees donated tree.  

Well, darn, I was liking what I'd done so far until I saw this pic; now I'm not so sure about my decision to do two rows of feathers across the sky.  I'll have to look at it again tomorrow before I move on.  I want to do ribbon candy in the darker blue with snowflakes section, but think I'm just going to do something really simple under the trees and houses.  I hope to have both pieces done sometime tomorrow and then I'll go back to the chickens before loading the bovine quilt onto Mo'e.

Chalk Up Another Three Chickens...

Only three more to go... then, I'll have to start figuring out something for the sashing.  I'm hoping I have enough fabrics left from these chickens to make the sashing.  Crossing my fingers.

And that's it for today/tonight.  I'm off to get some more housework done ( it's a lot easier to do now that the pain in my knee is gone).

Three more chickens

My procedure with my knee today went as well as I had hoped... right now, I'm pain free and hope that I will stay that way.
The doctor told me to take it easy for the rest of today and I did for a little while - took a nap and then ordered Pizza Hut for dinner.  But then I HAD to get back to my sewing room.  It's not like I was going to be doing any actual cleaning or anything else strenuous! 


First off, I want to show you the fabric that I chose for the backing fabric...

I just love it... I think it will be perfect with all the colors I'm using on the front.

Ok, this morning before I went for my procedure, I did this block

Then, after dinner tonight, I did these two....

The colors aren't showing up as bright as they truly are, which is a shame. 

 Ok  six done and only six more to go.

Whoops!

I almost forgot to post and then I forgot to import the pics from my phone - not that there's all that much to show tonight. 

I did finish the second chicken that wasn't quite done last night...

and then, because I wanted to hear the rest of the episode of Republic of Doyle on Netflix, I started on #3.  I didn't finish him/her before going to pay bills & get groceries but he/she's done now along with tracing #4 onto paper back fusible.

I think these are coming out so cute.  While I was at Walmart today, I bought the backing fabric that I needed for the Bathing Bovines - I ended up buying a black with white pin dots - and I bought this great fabric for the backing for these chickens - wasn't sure how much I'll need so just bought four yards.  I wish I could get this to show the true colors - they are BRIGHT and are going to look amazing with the chickens.

Ok, it's after 11 and Buddy is whining that it's bedtime.  Silly puppy

Woop! Woop!

The Beach Bovine quilt top is D O N E.  Yay!!  I've made a little video of all the blocks and then the borders as I added them along with the finished top, but I haven't had a lot of good luck posting it online.  I'll give it one more try here.

Ok, it appears to be uploading... I may have actual success here.  While we're waiting, I can tell you about the new quilt I started tonight.  It's another chicken one - this one is from Sindy Rodenmeyer of http://fatcatpatterns.com.  I just love her patterns.  I've been wanting to do these for a few years now ( have saved the patterns all that time) and since I had just enough of the black chicken wire fabric left to do them, I figured "what the heck; no time like the present"

This is the second one and it's not completely applique'd down; I'll probably finish it in the morning before we go run errands and get groceries.  I'm using a satin stitch this time around - I've been doing blanket stitching for most of my appliquing the past year.  Still using scraps as much as possible ( the blue was from yardage in my stash).

Ok that's it... it's after MIDNIGHT... and I'm getting really dirty looks from Buddy - it's way past our bedtime.

Bovines are moooving forward

I made a lot of progress on the Beach Bovines quilt top today... ALMOST done.

First, I had to finish framing out the 'boys'...

 Here they are piled up with the girls - or at least one of the boys is.. maybe I didn't take a pic after I finished the framing.  Next came the sashing...

 Then came the first side of the inner border... and did I do it the easy way by finding checkerboard fabric and then just slice to size?  Oh heck, no, that would have been too easy (and a lot more fun)... nope, these are two strips sewn together ( one black and one white), pressed open and then sliced into 1 1/2" blocks

 which were then sewn into long strips  - 50 pieces/pairs for each long side... I think I'll need 48 for each of  the top and bottom inner borders.  I've started working on them, but it's after 10:30 and I'd rather wait til morning to start fresh.   

This has been so much fun to do; I don't know why I waited so long to get started on it.  I guess I let other quilt patterns take priority when maybe I shouldn't have.

On another note... one of my quilts that I displayed in the quilt show this past weekend was my Caught Ya! that I did as a block of the month last year.  I heard there were several men who were drawn to it and really liked it.

That's really why I make quilts... because it's something that I enjoy doing and people seem to like the ones I do.  

Ok, it's off to bed for me in just a very few minutes.  First, I have a game or two of Words with Friends to play with one of my nieces and possibly a couple of other players.

Quilt Show Weekend

Which means that it was l o n g but not l o n g enough.

 I was busy yesterday sewing blocks together for a donation/charity baby quilt... it's certainly 'different' lol, but I'm not changing it - it is what it is.  All I'm doing now is adding wide borders and then quilting it.  I like it the way it is.  So there!

Today, I decided that I would work on the jars of fruit wall hanging that Annette had started but hadn't finished.  YIKES!  The fruit blocks are supposed to start out at 9" x 6".. these are closer to 9" x 5 3/4".  The corners are snowballed but some aren't straight and I tried fixing one by putting a new corner on it; it didn't help.  I gave up (temporarily) and spent the rest of the time at the quilt show just sitting and chatting with people until the quilts were taken down and we could take ours home with us.  I had four to bring home...

I was tickled to hear how well we did with people visiting the show, voting, AND some even left donations - more than usual.  More people visiting than in past years was apparently due to more advertising, although some of us wonder since we were told that there was an article in the local paper but we didn't see it.  Some did see it, though.  And we don't know if anyone listed it on "What's Happening in Charlotte"s page on facebook.  Well, they'll figure it out before the next show, I'm sure.

Cathy S. gave us a new pattern that should work great for a charity quilt Saturday sew in project.  I think I'm going to see what fabrics I've got and try it out.  Looks easy enough and we haven't done anything as a group for a couple of years at least - we're way overdue.

Well, guess that's it for the weekend.  I'll get the borders on the baby quilt tomorrow AFTER I finish doing the yellow frames around the boy bovines - five more to do.Then, I'll try and decide what I want to use for sashing and borders.

Ferrero Rocher time again?

Yep!  I finished another quilt... well, almost.  It's a charity/donation quilt that someone else made the top for and I did the quilting and added label and binding.  The binding is on, but I couldn't press it to the front because the marks that I made with quilt markers weren't coming out as quickly and easily as I thought they should - and I didn't dare use heat on them because I was afraid it might set the marks in permanently.  So, I sprayed heavily with water again before leaving for the guild meeting and checked when I came home a couple of hours later - they're gone - so now I can go press the binding and bring it to the front of the quilt and stitch it down.

This isn't all I did today, but it's pretty much it.  I also trimmed the bovine blocks and stitched borders around two of them - just to see if I'd like it - and I do ( apparently not enough to take pics, though lol).  That's all I would let myself do on them today because I really wanted to get to working on this 1600 race quilt ... such pretty batiks and the backing is a much deeper red...

I was reminded at guild tonight that I have a sunbonnet sue quilt top that I said I'd quilt and apparently, I said that I thought that the muslin that I have stored here would work for the backing.  Well, we'll see about that - I brought home some blue with tiny white pin dots that might work even better.  I'm not sure there's enough, but we'll see.  First, I have to find where I put that quilt top.  

Oh, and I was given four blocks - very nice blocks - by a member that didn't want them let alone make more.  I'm sure we can find a use for them - maybe they can go on the back of a quilt; we'll see.  If nothing else, we can make them into pot holders and donate them to the church's bazaar in Nov.

Well, that's it for tonight... I'm heading back into my sewing room to finish that binding.

Final Four - and we're not talking basketball

Yes!  I finished the final four bovines...

these make a total of twelve... twice what the pattern called for, but I wanted something bigger than a wall hanging.  I still have to add sashing and borders - haven't even picked the fabrics out for those yet, - oh, and I need backing fabric, too.  I'll get to all of it next week after the quilt show.

Today, I also put a backing together for the 1600 race quilt top that Annette made; hoping to get it loaded and quilted tomorrow - my legs are giving me fits so I may not feel up to it. 

And I also have to get something pulled together to work on while at the quilt show on Saturday.  I'm thinking that I can add the sashing and borders to the pink blocks that I made out of some of the 'scraps' that Judy gave me.  Some of what she gave me was yardage, but some was just 'chunks' like a fat quarter or maybe a third or half of a yard.  I used up the smaller chunks of the pink for the blocks and now will cut into the yardage for the sashing and border - should be able to have a nice sized baby quilt at least.  I'm pretty sure there will be yardage for the backing fabric, too.  I had to chuckle when I started looking through the bag because she said that it was just odds and ends and that they didn't go with anything else she had.. maybe not, but some certainly go with some of the other odds and ends in the bag.  I couldn't believe how much pink there was (that she said didn't go with anything else).

I think I'm going to try and cut out the pieces for my first Rare Bear so that I can assemble it at the quilt show; I'm sure I'll have time ( unless I get to yakking with people lol).

Three was the number today

First off, the pic I said I'd get of the Flight Pattern quilt that I finished yesterday...

I don't know why it looks so wrinkled - it doesn't look THAT bad in person... maybe once it's been washed and dried and shrinks up a little it won't look quite as bad - or, then again, it could look even worse,  We'll just have to cross our fingers and wait to see.

In the meantime, I had a busy day... I got THREE bovine blocks done today.

I don't know if the last two are fraternal twins or a couple where the wife bought the hubby bathing trunks to match her bikini - I think I'll  go with the last explanation.

This makes eight blocks done ( four of each) and only four more to go.  Then, it will be on to the sashing and probably borders.  I may be doing it along with another quilt that just needs sashing and borders, too, at our guild's sew in during our quilt show this coming weekend.

I pulled one of the tops that quilting friend, Annette, had finished before she went into assisted living, out of the box of her UFO projects that I have.  It's a 1600 strip quilt made with batiks - soft, pretty, feminine ones.. found a backing for it ( much darker and not batik - I'd call it a merlot wine/dark red sort of color) so that will be getting loaded onto Mo'e in the next day or so.

Oh, and I received the fabric for the paws and the registration number for the teddy bear that I'll be making for Rare Bear.  Right now, I'm just waiting on my teddy bear pattern to arrive.  It was in Grand Rapids on Saturday - so MAYBE I'll get it tomorrow.  I was considering making doll quilts for the gal that makes 'handicap' dolls for children but then saw an article about Rare Bears and decided I'd like to try my hand at those.  I used to make teddy bears so this shouldn't be any different except that I only have to assemble the body - I don't have to stuff it and I don't have to ship a stuffed bear, which could get expensive.  

They say that they use the registration number to know who made it and who gets it - and they take a pic of the child with the finished bear and then send it to whomever made it; I like that idea.  Most of the time when you make things for donation, you don't get to see the person who receives it - that's ok, but once in awhile it would be nice to see them with whatever it was you made. 

I remember when I first started making and donating crib/child's quilts, I kept hoping that I would see one that I had made with the child who had received it either while I was shopping down town or at one of the businesses around town.  Never happened.  

Ok, guess it's time for bed, according to Buddy... our animals don't understand the Spring forward/ Fall back business... heck, a lot of humans don't either.  Have an appointment to get a pedicure tomorrow but hope to get SOMETHING done before I go.

It's Ferrero Rocher time!

I finished another quilt so I get to 'celebrate' with a piece of Ferrero Rocher candy.

These candies are not cheap so I have decided that I only get one when I finish a quilt - that means, quilted, binding & label all sewn on.  The quilt I'm talking about is that one with the annoying name that I can never remember straight... Flight Pattern...

yeah, I think that's it.  No pic yet because it's so dark both outside and inside our house; hubby will hold it up for me tomorrow so that I can get the pic.  I'm not sure if I'm going to keep this one or donate it.  I'll decide later.

Mo'e is so grateful for his little trip for servicing that he's behaving very nicely - hope he keeps it up.  I don't know exactly what happened, something about a thread jam... took the man all of five minutes, if that long, to fix the problem... then about an hour to reset the timing ( in between waiting on customers).  I didn't mind the wait; I sat in the car with Buddy (our dog) and chatted on the phone with my friend, Vicki - and he didn't charge me!  I did buy three yards of fabric while I was there.  But it's beautiful and will make a great background for the penguin quilt that's coming up on my to do list.  I didn't know how much fabric I needed so bought the three - looked at the pattern today and I only need 1 and 1/4 yards - I may end up making two or maybe just make it larger - we'll see.  I have to finish the bovine blocks first.

And I found the cutest pattern today - can't show you or tell you anything, though except that it's a secret project.  Will share more about it later.

One lonely bovine

this is all I finished today..  I think I got enough traced onto paper backed fusible to do a second one, but that's as far as I got.  Not sure why... don't know where the day went.

Called the local dealer for my "LA" early this morning and he can't get anyone out here for at least two weeks, BUT if I can get someone to load it into the car for me and I bring it to the store, they'll have someone get it out of the car for me.  And hopefully work on it while I'm there so that I don't have to leave it and come back another day - although that might be a good idea - it would give me more time to work on blocks & tops and then when I go to pick 'Moe' up, I can drop off 'Marie' for her d & c.  and MAYBE Loren will have found the wheels for my frame and we can get them installed and any adjustments for height done before Moe goes back on.

Thankfully, Katie's hubby is going to come over to load Moe into my car tomorrow morning... in the meantime, I just have to figure out what needs to be unplugged and/or removed so that he can lift Moe out of the frame.
